The essays in this volume were originally delivered as lectures at a symposium on “Artistic and Literary Patronage in Ancient Rome” held in the fall of 1979 at the University of Texas at Austin. Iwould like to thank the College of Liberal Arts for making this symposium possible and my colleagues in the Department of Classics who joined me in entertaining the visiting scholars. Iam also indebted to the Graduate School for a grant which facilitated the preparation of this book and to the support of the Mellon Foundation.
