Covering both the disastrous failure of the economy and its gradual recovery, this new resource examines the causes of the collapse, some of which are still disputed; the impact of unemployment and under-employment; the sinking confidence of people throughout the world; the disorder in Germany after World War I that led to the rise of Adolf Hitler; and all the other dimensions of this global calamity. Special attention is paid to the New Deal, Franklin D. Roosevelt's domestic reform program. Covered are early efforts aimed at stabilizing agriculture and business, controlling prices and inflation, and developing public works as well as the eventual creation of social and economic programs designed to benefit working people.
